University Foundation Programme

At St Michael Abbey School, we understand that the journey to university begins long before a student steps onto campus. As a British school in a world community, our University Foundation Programme is thoughtfully designed for students preparing to transition smoothly into higher education – whether in the UK or internationally.

Why choose the programme?
Tailored for global success

At St Michael Abbey School, we recognise the unique needs of international learners. Our University Foundation Programme is specifically designed to support students in developing strong English language proficiency, academic writing skills and research methods culminating in an IELTS exam. Additionally, students refresh their subject specific skills to ensure parity with those who have completed secondary education in the UK. This programme ensures a confident and seamless transition from secondary education to university, whether in the UK or abroad.

Our ethos underpins everything we do. We prepare students not only for academic achievement but also to contribute meaningfully to the global community. Through our Liberal Arts curriculum students gain a broad, interdisciplinary foundation and develop independent learning, analytical thinking and cultural fluency.

Led by experienced educators, the programme encourages academic excellence and intellectual curiosity. With small class sizes, we provide personalised guidance, mentorship and tailored academic support – helping students thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

We believe education shapes character. Students are encouraged to take part in a wide range of co-curricular opportunities. Through competitive sport and creative arts to community service and leadership initiatives students can foster a strong sense of responsibility, teamwork and global citizenship.

Our graduates will go on to study at prestigious universities across the UK and internationally. With robust preparation and one-to-one support throughout the university application process and coaching for interviews and specific entrance exams, we ensure every student is well equipped to take their next steps with confidence and ambition.

Who can study on the University Foundation Programme?

The University Foundation Programme is designed specifically for international students aged 17 to 19, who do not have British A-level qualifications and aiming to pursue an undergraduate degree in the UK. Joining our Year 13 A-level students, they can choose to be entered for A-level qualifications alongside their native equivalent.

You will have completed your secondary education in your home country and seek a programme preparing you with the English language skills and knowledge required for undergraduate studies at a UK university. The programme features significant English language instruction.

Why it matters

At St Michael Abbey School, we believe that preparing for university is not just about meeting academic entry requirements, it’s about shaping well-rounded, confident individuals who are ready to thrive in a global society.

As a British School in a World Community, we understand the importance of nurturing not only academic excellence but also cultural awareness, character and independence. Our University Foundation Programme ensures that international students are supported holistically, with a curriculum that strengthens core academic skills while promoting critical thinking, resilience and global citizenship. Throughout the Liberal Arts course, students develop the ability to think independently, research effectively and engage with complex ideas across disciplines. Beyond the classroom, participation in sports, leadership initiatives and community projects help cultivate a sense of purpose, teamwork and responsibility.

This holistic approach matters because universities today seek more than just grades. They look for young people who can lead, collaborate and contribute. At St Michael Abbey School, we provide the foundation for our students not only to access top universities, but to make meaningful contributions once they are there.
